Infant Swimming Resource, survival swimming lessons for children 6 months to 6 years.  Serving Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch, Bradenton, Venice and surrounding areas...

Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) is a nationally recognized system of aquatic survival instruction for infants and young children.  The program focuses on educating parents and children about aquatic survival and safety issues.

Since 1966, ISR has safely delivered over 6 million lessons to teach water self-rescue skills to more than 177,224 babies and has educated parents and medical experts nationwide on water safety techniques and proven instruction methods. To date, ISR has 788 documented cases of children using ISR techniques to save themselves from drowning.
Please remember that there is no substitute for adult supervision.

ISR Instructors are the most highly trained and qualified instructors in any swimming program in the country and must undergo strict re-certification testing annually.  Each instructor is academically trained and tested in areas such as child psychology, physiology, anatomy and behavioral science to provide the safest lesson possible for your child.  In addition, each instructor spends a minimum of 60 hours hands on, supervised in-water training working with actual students.

What will my child learn?

Babies 6-12 months are taught to rotate from a face down position in the water to a back float to rest and breathe until help arrives. Acquiring this survival float typically takes 3-5 weeks.

Children as young as one year can be taught to swim and rotate onto their backs to float, rest, and breathe and then flip back over and continue swimming to safety. This skill is called a swim-float-swim and typically takes 4-7 weeks to accomplish.

Each child’s lesson is individualized – one on one with the instructor so students can start any time, typically on Mondays.  The parent or caretaker watches every lesson poolside. Students attend short lessons (10 minutes) every Monday-Friday (five lessons per week) and will have the same time slot each day.  Much is learned in this short but very challenging private class.  Daily attendance is crucial for the learning and retention of skills.
The ISR course length is approximate and based on individual needs and abilities.

How will my child learn?

Your child will learn by the application of operant conditioning and behavioral psychology during each lesson.  Each child is treated as an individual and each lesson is unique and tailored to your child’s specific needs.  Your child will interact with the environment and will be reinforced for the activities that solve a given problem.  High retention rates are associated with this type of sensori-motor learning.  Children learn to become aquatic problem solvers rather than trained floaters or swimmers.
